Today’s IT teams use a huge amount of tools to accomplish their broad scope of work. Our 2023 State Of ITOps Report shows that over 50% of organizations use six or more tools to manage their endpoints. Tool overload like this can create unnecessary complexity and IT fatigue. Tools that offer a wide range of capabilities and enable more tasks to be completed without leaving the console can help reduce the onslaught of niche tools.
At Automox, we’re on a mission to help IT teams win hours back in their day and slash the complexity of traditional IT toolsets. We develop feature sets that stop the swivel chair approach of moving between multiple consoles to accomplish a task. And now we're adding more granular role-based access control (RBAC) to support greater operational efficiency.
Expanded RBAC to access, troubleshoot, and resolve endpoint issues
We built remote control (often a separate feature outside of endpoint management tools) to help administrators and help desk staff instantly access, troubleshoot, and resolve endpoint issues without switching to yet another tool.
But as the breadth of capabilities grows for Automox, more people from your IT team may want to access it, and for good reason – it’s just easier. But, as Uncle Ben says to the young Peter Parker, “With great power comes great responsibility.”
The quote rings true whether you’re Spider-Man or running an IT team. It’s imperative to guarantee the authorization and administrative rights to your tools are lock-tight to avoid access creep or allowing certain individuals to take action outside their areas of expertise.
Enter POLP: Principle of least privilege
IT teams should always follow the principle of least privilege (POLP).
POLP is a security principle, and a key element of the Zero Trust framework, that dictates users only have the rights to specific actions or views, such as reading, writing, or executing a specified list of tasks.
POLP makes certain the only permissions granted to users provide the specific access they need to do their job and nothing more. This decreases the risk of applying malicious or accidental changes due to human error.
Following the POLP principle, Automox has added another role to allow you to get even more granular in the permissions you grant to your users.
Automox expands RBAC with Helpdesk Operator
The new Helpdesk Operator role gives your support staff the ability to view endpoints and the information needed to troubleshoot and access endpoints to help with support issues remotely.
However, a Helpdesk Operator does not have the authority to modify or deploy configuration changes or patch policies at scale.
This way, Helpdesk Operators can quickly triage specific endpoints, but the management and patching of endpoints are left to those with the expertise to do so.
We’re excited to announce that this new role is generally available for customers, try it out for yourself now!
